A Tribute to Dutch Banknote design by Oxenaar

The graphic designs by Ootje Oxenaar for several Dutch banknotes made this paper money one of the most beautiful and colourful currency in the world. Unfortunately (according to some) the introduction of the Euro as an European currency on January 1st 2002 in the Netherlands and most of Europe changed all that.

Before the end of 2001 the Dutch artist / photographer Ton de Korte created 2 sizeable paintings which are inspired by Oxenaar's design for the 50 guilder banknote and the 250 guilder banknote. By doing so, de Korte meant to honour Oxenaar for his graphic design on the Dutch currency which was about to become history. Simultaneously these paintings are a response to the sentiment of many Dutch people at the time about wanting to retain their Dutch currency. A nationalistic sentiment shared by many people in other european nations who saw 'their' currency replaced by an unappealling Euro.

Ton de Korte was ahead of his time with this tribute to Oxenaar's graphic design for the Dutch currency in 2001. Just recently Oxenaar's design for the 50 and 250 Guilder banknotes were voted by the Dutch people as one of the most beautiful product designs in the history of the Netherlands. The 50 Guilder banknote design came in second place just after the design for Fokker Friendship aeroplane.

De grafische ontwerpen van Robert Deodaat Emile (Ootje) Oxenaar voor verschillende Nederlandse bankbiljetten maakten de Nederlandse valuta tot een van het mooiste en kleurrijkste papiergeld in omloop. Helaas (volgens sommigen) maakte de introductie van de Euro als Europese valuta in Nederland en vele andere Europese staten op 1 Januari 2002 hier een einde aan.

Vóór het einde van 2001 heeft de kunstenaar / fotograaf Ton de Korte 2 schilderijen van een flink formaat gemaakt die zijn geinspireerd op het 50 gulden biljet en het 250 gulden biljet van Oxenaar. Deze schilderijen zijn bedoeld als een eerbetoon door de kunstenaar aan Oxenaar's prachtige grafische ontwerpen voor de Nederlandse valuta die op dat moment op het punt stond geschiedenis te worden. Tegelijkertijd zijn deze 2 kunstwerken ook een weerklank van het sentiment van vele Nederlanders in die tijd voor het behoud van de Nederlandse Gulden. Een nationalistisch sentiment dat door vele bewoners van andere Europese landen over 'hun' valuta ten aanzien van de onaantrekkelijke Euro werd gedeeld.

Ton de Korte was zijn tijd vooruit in 2001 met dit eerbetoon aan Oxenaar. Onlangs zijn het 50 en 250 Gulden biljet van Oxenaar's hand uitgeroepen door het Nederlandse volk als één van de mooiste product-ontwerpen in Nederlandse geschiedenis. Het ontwerp voor het 50 Gulden biljet van Oxenaar kwam op de tweede plaats ná het ontwerp voor het Nederlandse vliegtuig de Fokker Vriendschap.
